Why curiosity strengthens intimacy (and how to practice it daily)
“Curiosity is the opposite of assumption and assumption is where intimacy goes to die.” – Ask Nicki
We often think intimacy is built through closeness, time together, shared beds, shared lives. But in my work with couples, I see again and again that curiosity is the real glue.
Curiosity is what keeps a long-term relationship alive. It’s the difference between “I already know you” and “I’m still interested in you.”
Real curiosity isn’t interrogation. It’s a stance. It sounds like: “Help me understand.” It feels like: “You’re allowed to change, and I want to meet you there.”
When curiosity replaces assumption, defensiveness softens. Research backs this up; feeling genuinely heard builds trust and emotional safety.
Curiosity isn’t a personality trait. It’s a practice. And when it becomes part of the rhythm of a relationship, intimacy stops feeling fragile and starts feeling resilient.
